To improve indoor air quality with your HVAC system in Texas, consider these key strategies:
-
Advanced Filtration: Install high-efficiency HEPA filters to capture dust, pollen, and pet dander. The Solaris Activated Carbon / PCO Air Purifier offers multi-technology filtration for comprehensive air cleaning.
-
UV Light Technology: Incorporate UV lights to kill bacteria, viruses, and mold spores. Brands such as REME HALO and Solaris uses UVLED technology for energy-efficient germicidal treatment.
-
Humidity Control: Use whole-home dehumidifiers to prevent mold growth in Texas's humid climate. During drier months, consider humidifiers to maintain optimal levels.
-
Air Purification Systems: Invest in systems like the Solaris PCO Air Purifier, which combines UV light, photocatalytic oxidation, and ionization to improve air quality at molecular and microscopic levels.
-
Ventilation: Ensure proper air circulation with mechanical ventilation and regular window opening during milder seasons.
-
Regular Maintenance: Schedule professional HVAC servicing twice yearly, replace filters monthly, and clean ducts, coils, and drain pans.
-
Carbon Monoxide Detection: Install CO detectors for safety, especially if you have gas appliances.
-
Air Balancing: Eliminate hot and cold spots to improve overall HVAC efficiency and air distribution.
By implementing these measures, you can create a healthier living environment, reduce allergens, and improve overall comfort in your Texas home or business.
In Elgin, TX, the frequency of air filter replacement depends on several factors:
-
: Change filters every 30 to 90 days
-
For homes with pets: Replace every 60 days
-
For those with allergies or respiratory conditions: Change every 20-45 days
-
(4-5 inches): Replace every 6 months
-
: Change monthly
Factors affecting replacement frequency:
-
Local air quality
-
HVAC system usage
-
Number of occupants
-
Presence of pets
-
Filter type and quality
To determine the optimal schedule, check your filter monthly. If it appears dirty or clogged, replace it immediately. Regular replacement ensures better indoor air quality, improved HVAC efficiency, and can help manage Texas's seasonal allergies, particularly cedar fever.
To troubleshoot common HVAC issues before calling a technician, follow these steps:
-
: Ensure it's set correctly and has working batteries.
-
: Replace dirty filters, which should be done every 30-90 days.
-
: Reset any tripped breakers for your HVAC system.
-
: Remove obstructions around outdoor units and indoor vents.
-
: Identify strange sounds that may indicate specific problems.
-
: Ensure all vents are open and unblocked for proper air distribution.
-
: Inspect around the indoor unit for any signs of leakage.
-
: Gently hose down outdoor coils after shutting off power.
-
: Look for ice buildup, which may indicate low refrigerant.
-
: Run both heating and cooling to verify functionality.
If these steps don't resolve the issue, or if you encounter complex problems like refrigerant leaks or electrical issues, it's time to call a professional HVAC technician in Elgin, TX for a thorough inspection and repair.
Yes, running your ceiling fan can absolutely help reduce HVAC costs, especially in homes around Elgin, TX. Ceiling fans improve air circulation, allowing you to feel cooler in the summer without lowering the thermostat. In fact, using your fan in a counterclockwise direction during hot months creates a wind-chill effect, so you can raise your AC setting by 4°F without sacrificing comfort. In the winter, switching the fan to clockwise at a low speed helps distribute warm air more evenly. This means your HVAC system doesn’t have to work as hard, which can lower your energy bills and extend the life of your unit. For maximum savings, always turn off fans when you leave the room—they cool people, not spaces.
Yes, it's okay to build a shed or fence around your outdoor HVAC unit, but only if it’s done properly. To keep your system running efficiently in Elgin’s hot climate, you must maintain at least 2–3 feet of clearance on all sides of the unit. This ensures proper airflow, which is critical for cooling performance and energy efficiency. Make sure the structure allows for adequate ventilation and easy access for maintenance or repairs. Blocking airflow can cause your HVAC system to overheat, leading to higher energy bills and costly damage. Use louvered panels or slatted fencing to conceal the unit without restricting air movement. Done right, a shed or screen can enhance curb appeal while still protecting your equipment.

I received approval to repair the identified issues with both the return and supply plenums. After completing the repairs, I observed that the airflow to the top floor had significantly improved. I also replaced the air filter on the first floor. However, I did not replace the filter for the second floor, as the correct size was not available at the time. Dee Dee declined an estimate for the Comf1 upgrade for her system. I also noted that one of the half windows is partially uncovered and recommended that she install blinds to help improve over
I spoke with David regarding his HVAC concerns. He mentioned that the system is able to cool when outdoor temperatures are mild, but struggles to keep up when it gets hotter outside.
